Migrating is reality. Reality is migrating.

The “Migrating Reality Project” ** organized between 04-05 April 2008 at GdK, Galerie der Künste in Berlin is a live platform to discuss the mixing and remixing of art forms and digital data flows within the context of the current worldwide reality of migration.

From 01 March in cooperation with the online zine balsas.cc for media and technology (http://www.balsas.cc) we are initiating a focused look at the migration between reality, media, technologies, art, spaces, disciplines, politics, and networks. Migration interests us in cultural and technological aspects as well as in aspects of the movement of different objects and subjects. Balsas.cc has been publishing online in Lithuanian and English from Vilnius, Lithuania since 2005. Every fourth month it announces a new topic and as of now “Migrating Reality” is open for your interpretation.

We invite the submission of texts, sounds, and visuals (photo, video, etc) which will help us to delve deeper into the subject during the Berlin project. Balsas.cc is stimulating interest in the generation and publishing of ideas online — the most interesting of which will be published in the printed catalog at the end of 2008. We are interested in not only pure texts but also in migrating formats, interdisciplinary discussions, interviews, and the meetings of artists and theoreticians. Please submit texts in English, German, and Lithuanian to balsas@vilma.cc. The rolling submission and publication period is from 01 March to 01 June 2008.

  1. […] CALL FOR PAPERS (IN ENGLISH) Nuo kovo 1 dienos pradedame domėtis migracija tarp realybės, medijų, technologijų, meno, erdvių, disciplinų, vaizdų ir tinklų. […]

  2. Ninian Perry says:

I run a new music ensemble called the Paragon Kaleidophone Ensemble which is looking at the music brought to Scotland through human migration and by musicians migrating their musical thinking. Our interest is in the rich vein of creativity which is exposed when Scottish music and new Western music come together with music expressed from all parts of the globe and brought to Scotland by migrating new settlers. We are practicing musicians rather than academics so we could offer evidence of this as recorded music and live concerts.

It is now recognised that as Europe’s population ages with fewer workers to support a greater number of older people who will draw on Government pension and welfare schemes, the need to welcome migrants to fill the jobs has become a necessity.

It is hoped that migrants will be attracted from areas of high population and low employment zones in order to take on that role of support and at the same time benefit from the European standard of living. It is likely to be from Africa and India that most migrants will be invited. Global companies like IBM are already encouraging businesses to look at sustainment ideas in the face of an aging Europe and to recognize that migration is a key factor. Current estimates are that we will need 56 million migrant workers by 2050. In that time, the pace of migration currents will increase and it is vitally important that music and other art disciplines use this opportunity to invigorate and inspire new dimensions of artistic creativity brought into Europe. Kaleidophone Ensemble is lucky to be able to test out the potential for this musical alchemy by playing with excellent musicians from Africa, India, China and the Middle East - audiences love the sound mix so we must be on the right track. We are getting a new website done and will send you the new site address when it is up an running in the next few weeks. NP
